Witnesses sought after fatal collision near Carryduff

The Police Ombudsman’s Office has appealed for witnesses following a fatal collision involving two vehicles near Carryduff last night (Thursday 16 October).

One of the vehicles involved in the collision was being pursued by police, and in line with standard procedure the police have referred the pursuit to the Police Ombudsman’s Office for independent investigation. The PSNI are also conducting an investigation into the incident.

The collision happened on the Saintfield Road, in the Brackenvale area, shortly before 9pm. It involved a Jaguar car containing three people, which was being pursued by police and heading towards Carryduff, and a Volkswagen car travelling towards Belfast.

An 18-year-old man who was in the Jaguar has since died. Three other people, have been injured, two of whom are in a critical condition.

The 18-year-old who died in the collision has since been named as 18-year-old Conal Daly from the Greater Belfast area.

Police Ombudsman investigators and forensic specialists have been at the scene overnight, and a number of cars have been recovered for forensic examination.

A spokesman for the Office said: “We would be keen to speak to anyone who saw the collision or the pursuit leading up to it. We understand the pursuit began close to the roundabout at the junction of the Ravenhill Road and Ormeau Road in Belfast.”
