Witness appeal after Broadway disturbance

Published Date: 5 July 2010

An appeal for witnesses has been made after police fired a number of baton rounds in response to rioting in the Broadway roundabout/Donegall Road area of Belfast on Saturday evening (3 July).

The use of the Attenuated Energy Projectiles (AEPs) is being investigated by the Police Ombudsman's Office, as is normal procedure whenever the police discharge a firearm.

A spokesman for the Office said, "We are looking to get a clear understanding of what happened, and are interested in speaking to people who may have witnessed the disturbance in the area between 8:00pm on Saturday evening and 4:00am on Sunday morning."

Anyone with information who feels they can assist the investigation is asked to call the Police Ombudsman Witness Appeal Line on 0800 032 7880.
