Shots fired: Police Ombudsman appeal

Published Date: 11 May 2001

The Police Ombudsman’s Office has appealed for information about an incident last night (Thursday) in which a number of shots were fired in the Monagh Bypass area of Belfast.

Its believed the incident began shortly after seven o’clock when police motorcyclists tried to stop a stolen red Vauxhall Nova car as it travelled along the Westlink.

The car, which had five youths on board, is reported to have travelled along the country bound carriageway of the Westlink and on arriving at the Grosvenor Road roundabout, drove the wrong way along the city-bound carriage before crossing back to the county-bound lane.

The Police Ombudsman’s Office has been told that several pedestrians, including a child, had to jump out of the vehicle’s way as it negotiated the Kennedy Way roundabout and drove through Andersontown.

It’s believed that police fired shots in an attempt to stop the vehicle, which was later found abandoned in the Monagh Bypass area.

The Police Ombudsman’s Office is keen to hear from anyone who saw the car as its drove along the Westlink and through Andersonstown or anyone who saw the shots being fired. The number to phone is 028 90 828687.

The Police Ombudsman’s Office is called in to investigate all incidents where a police weapon has been fired.
