Police Ombudsman investigators in Derry/Londonderry to seek information relating to explosion deaths

Published Date: 15 July 2010

Investigators from the Police Ombudsman's Office will be in Derry/Londonderry on Thursday 22 July to appeal for information about a number of events in the Creggan area in August 1988, including an explosion which claimed the lives of a number of people.

The Office is keen to speak to anyone who might recall the following incidents:

- an attack on Rosemount Police Station and the abandoning of a car in Kildrum Gardens on 25th August 1988;
- a robbery in McDee's Hot Food Shop on Beechwood Avenue in the late hours of 27th August / early hours of 28th August 1988;
- an explosion in Kildrum Gardens on 31st August 1988 which resulted in the tragic death of two people. A third person caught up in the explosion died in hospital seven months later.

A spokesman said: "We have received a public complaint about how police dealt with the circumstances surrounding the explosion on 31 August 1988.

"Although these events took place over 20 years ago, we hope there are people in the local community who can recall aspects of what happened and may be willing to help our enquiries.

"To help them do so, our investigators will be available in the Healthy Living Centre at Lis Linn Central Drive, Creggan, on Thursday to speak to anyone who can provide any information about these incidents. Investigators will be at the centre between 10 am on 9pm. No appointment is necessary to speak to them.

"Alternatively, anyone who has information but is unable to make it on Thursday can also contact us on 028 9082 8681 during normal working hours any weekday, and an appointment can then be arranged."
