Police Ombudsman investigating sudden death at Musgrave police station in Belfast

The Police Ombudsman has launched an investigation following the sudden death of a 34-year-old man at Musgrave Police Station in central Belfast this morning, Tuesday 4 Sept.

The man had been arrested on Saturday in connection with the murder of 52-year-old George Gray in the Cregagh area of east Belfast, and was being held in police custody. His body was found in his cell this morning.

A spokesman for the Police Ombudsman's Office said: "Our investigators are at Musgrave Police Station and are overseeing a detailed forensic examination of the scene in order to establish the exact circumstances of the death.

"Police Ombudsman Family Liaison Officers have been in contact with the deceased man's family and the Coroner's Office has been informed.

"A post mortem examination will be conducted in due course. The man's name has not yet been released."
