Published Date: 19 February 2015

The Police Ombudsman’s Office has appealed for witnesses following the use of a Taser by police at Bedford Street in Belfast last night (Wednesday 18 February).

The incident happened at around 7.15pm outside the Bridge House pub. The weapon was used against a man who had been sought by police after escaping from prison escorts at a Dublin hospital.

He was subsequently arrested, treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to hospital for treatment to self-inflicted injuries.

All discharges of police firearms are referred by the PSNI to the Police Ombudsman’s Office for independent investigation.

Investigators, who were at the scene last night, have appealed for anyone who saw the use of Taser – including those who may have provided accounts to local media outlets - to contact the Police Ombudsman’s Office on either 0800 032 7880 or 028 9082 8777.
