Police Ombudsman appeals for information about injury to girl at band parade

Published Date: 30 August 2012

The Police Ombudsman's Office has appealed for information about an incident at a band parade in north Belfast on Saturday 25 August during which an 11-year-old girl sustained an injury to her arm.

It happened at about 6.10pm at Stanhope Street, close to the junction with Clifton Street, as police dealt with scuffles which broke out as Loyalist bands passed a group of protesters.

The Police Ombudsman's Office was informed about the incident by police and had since received a complaint about what happened. An investigation is now underway.

A spokesman said: "There were a lot of people in the area at the time, and we would appeal to anyone who saw how the young girl sustained the injury to contact us."

He added: "It is also possible that someone may have been using a mobile phone or video camera to record what was happening, and if anyone has footage showing how the girl was injured, we would like to hear from them."

Anyone who believes they may be able to assist is asked to contact the Police Ombudsman's freephone witness appeal line, which is 0800 032 7880.
