No investigation required following police response to hotel disturbance

Published Date: 16 November 2011

The Police Ombudsman's Office has made enquiries into an incident leading to the death of an adult male in Belfast on Sunday 13 November.

Police were called to deal with a disturbance at a hotel in the south of the city. Prior to their arrival a number of individuals left the scene. While at the hotel the police recieved a call stating that a male had been found in the water a short distance away. He was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Ombudsman investigators, having been made aware of the incident by the police, looked to establish if police contact had contributed to the death. After initial enquiries and speaking to a number of witnesses, it is clear that no police officer had contact with the deceased before he entered the river. As a result it has been decided that no investigation by the Office is required.
