Mr McGowan was arrested following an incident on the Beersbridge Road, east Belfast last night.  A spokesman for the Police Ombudsman’s Office said: “At approximately 2.00am this morning the Office was alerted by the police that a man had died whilst in police custody.  In line with normal procedure we immediately launched an independent and impartial investigation into the circumstances of the death.”

A number of investigators attended Lisburn Police Station and began a detailed examination of the scene.  Later this afternoon they will begin speaking to witnesses to the incident in which the man was arrested, as well as investigating the actions of police following the arrest up to the point at which the man was discovered in the police cell.

“The Office will conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the death, and will release a report once the investigation is complete,” said the spokesman.
