Death of Stephen McCullough: Police Ombudsman Appeal for Information

The Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland has appealed for information about a man whose body was found in Cavehill Country Park in Northern Belfast on Wednesday afternoon, January 16 2002.

The body of Stephen McCullough, 39, who was from the Newtownabbey area, was found at the foot of cliffs within the Country Park. He had been released from Musgrave St. police station in Belfast approximately three hours earlier.

The Police Ombudsman’s Office investigate all deaths that happen in police custody and those deaths that happen within 24 hours of the deceased being released from custody.

A Police Ombudsman’s Office spokesperson said the Office is keen to hear from anyone who saw Mr
McCullough between one o’clock on Wednesday morning and half past one that afternoon.

“We are particularly keen to discover how Mr McCullough travelled from the police station to the Country Park,” he said.

Mr McCullough is described as having been 5ft 8ins tall, of average build with short dark hair. He had been wearing a white Ellesse top which had blue stripes on the arms, blue tracksuit trousers and alight blue woollen hat.
