The Police Ombudsman’s Office has issued an appeal for anyone who saw the fatal road collision near Newry this morning (September 30) to contact them.

The collision happened on the carriageway between Banbridge and Newry and its junction with the Derrycrow Road at around 9.20.am.

Two nuns, who were members of the Sister of Mercy order based at Ballysillan House, Crumlin Road in Belfast , died in the collision.

The car they were travelling in, a silver Renault Clio, was in collision with a police vehicle, a silver Mitibushui Shogun.

In all situations where a member of the public who has died has previously been in contact with police officers, the matter is referred to the Police Ombudsman’s Office for independent investigation.

A team of Police Ombudsman investigators have spent the day examining the scene and  conducting inquiries in the area.

Anyone who was in the area at the time and who saw what happened is asked to call 0800 032 7880.
