Appeal for witnesses to drowning in the River Faughan

Published Date: 8 April 2010

The Police Ombudsman's Office has appealed for witnesses into an incident last night in which a teenage boy drowned in the River Faughan in Drumahoe, near Derry/Londonderry.

As is routine in situations such as this following contact with the police, the PSNI informed the Police Ombudsman's Office of the death and an immediate investigation, independent of the PSNI, was launched.

Police Ombudsman investigators have been at the scene through the night, and are co-ordinating forensic, mapping and photography work, as well as making all necessary enquiries.

A Family Liaison Office has also been appointed.

A spokesman for the Police Ombudsman said: "We would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed what happened to come forward. They can contact us on our Freephone information line, which is 0800 032 7880".
